Nightline has it all, and the student-run telephoneservice will celebrate its 20-year anniversary
on February 14.

"Studentscan call to chat about anything that's
on their minds," said Emily Liang, Nightline VP
External."Wewant them to know that we're here
to listen if they need someone to talk to."
The confidential and anonymous service is run
exclusivelyby volunteers who are all trained in
active listening, a special supportive method of
hearing concerns.

'We are not a counselling service," explained
Liang."Activelistening is listening, but also affirming the caller's own decisions."

Averagingabout 25 calls a night, Liang says a good
percentageof calls are from students who just want
someoneto listen to them. Nightline has also answered
questionsabout term papers, musical trivia, and sexual know-how,just to name a few of the random topics. They'lleven settle the score on a bet or play word
associationgames with you.
"The random calls are the fun ones," said Liang.

Nightlinewas proposed by a female McGillstudent
in 1982,who modeled the idea after a similar and successful UK organization called the Samaritans. The
service began at McGill on February 14. 1984. The
Valentine'sday birthday seems appropriate, according
to Liang,given Nightline's message.

"It's a coincidence that Nightline's anniversary is on
Valentine'sday but we're running with it," said Liang.
"We'rehelping the conununity and we're there for the
students.-

According to SSMU VP Clubs and Services Mia
Gewertz.the club is an important and enduring part of
student life.

"J see a lot of things start up and die within six
months,"said Gewertz. "Nightline has planted roots
andgrown. What they are doing is clearly working and
how they are doing it is
clearly working. Nightline is
Obviouslysomething we need, and something we
shouldbe proud of."
Jaime Ferguson-Woods, a UI Political Science stu-

dent, said the service is widely used among students.
'Everyoneknows about it," he said. "I once called to
findout where an exam was and they told me I was the
tenthperson who had
called about it that day."
